Maxis continuously strives to provide a secure and safe Internet browsing experience for our customers. In line with industry best practice, Maxis will no longer support SMTP services (port 25) from 1st March 2010 onwards. Webmail services such as Google Mail, Hotmail, and Yahoo! Mail which are accessed through the web browser are NOT affected by this.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Why is Maxis making this change?
In recent months, Maxis has found that a small number of our customers have been abusing the network by sending out an unusually large number of spam e-mails. In some cases, machines may also be compromised by malware which users have downloaded unknowingly. This can create problems for e-mail servers and innocent users such as yourself.2. What is SMTP?
All e-mail sent via the Internet is routed through the port 25, the channel used for communication between an e-mail client and an e-mail server. Normal webmail such as Google Mail, Hotmail, and Yahoo! Mail which are accessed using a web browser are unaffected as they do not use the SMTP protocol.3. I am using Maxis fixed broadband services, am I impacted by this policy change?
No. At present, this policy is implemented for all Maxis Wireless Broadband subscribers only.4. Who is affected by this change?
This change would only impact you if you have been using an e-mail client (such as Outlook, Thunderbird etc) to access your e-mail account remotely. Normal webmail such as Google Mail, Hotmail, and Yahoo! Mail which are accessed using a web browser are unaffected as they do not use the SMTP protocol.5. How do I prevent my machine from being infected by malware?
We recommend that you regularly scan and protect your PC using a reputable security solution. You will also be able to obtain free anti-virus products online, for example from www.avg.com.6. I need to use SMTP services; what should I do?
You will need to subscribe to a Maxis fixed broadband service in order to use SMTP services. Please refer to our coverage areas and packages at www.maxis.com.my/broadband.
Information kat atas adalah untuk pelanggan maxis broadband. i.e Aku. Cis cis cis. Susah le skit nak ngatau email nih nanti.
